During these dog days of summer, it can be hard to think of anything but finding some relief from the heat. We can't be consumed by our own quest for comfort though, we must remember that we are not the only ones experiencing these extremes. Extreme heat also poses serious health risks for our furry friends.
Like us, they are at risk of dehydration and heat exhaustion. Young puppies and kittens (less than 6 months of age), geriatric pets, and overweight pets are especially at risk of heat related illness. The Iowa Veterinary Medical Association has more information about how heat affects pets and signs to watch for to spot heatstroke. Another concern is the effect hot surfaces may have on pets' tender paws; keep in mind that if it is too for you to walk around barefoot, it is also too hot for your pet.
Safety & Prevention Tips for Pets on Hot Days
-
Let pets outside early in the day before it gets too hot
-
Consider giving pets a pair of shoes to protect their paws from hot surfaces.
-
Provide ample cool, fresh water.
-
Provide shady spaces for pets to seek refuge from the sun and heat.
-
Never leave a pet locked in a car on a hot, or even warm, day.
Rodents are also affected by heat, just like pets and people. They are seeking cooler temperatures in the form of shade and air conditioning, as well as water sources. Make sure your home is not inviting to rodents by keeping things dry, sealing potential entry points, and protecting your home with Fresh Cab Natural Rodent Repellent pouches.
Summer is a special time, but it comes with its own special safety concerns. Be proactive when it comes to protecting your home and pets this summer and enjoy it while it lasts!
