I had the honor of attending a dear friend's wedding this past weekend. While I was standing near the bride, I overheard another guest, an older lady, complaining to the bride about a mouse in her house and how she was too afraid to go home alone. She was trying to convince the happy couple to come stay with her...on their wedding night of all nights! Fortunately, I swooped in with my mouse detective know-how and saved the bride from an awkward situation.
After discussing the matter with the guest a bit more, she told me that she had just moved in to a new house about a month ago and didn't know how a mouse could have gotten in. She even had Fresh Cab pouches placed near the door into her house from the garage. I asked her a number of questions like:
- Are there cracks or holes in the foundation big enough to fit a dime through?
- Do you live near a field?
- Do you ever leave windows or doors open and unattended for longer than a few seconds, such as leaving a door open to haul in the groceries?
The guest answered "Yes," to all of my questions, leading me to believe that there were many other entrances the mouse could have used to enter her home other than through the Fresh Cab protected garage entrance. I informed her that a good way to ensure that this would never happen again is to place Fresh Cab pouches near any crack or hole in foundation, as well as fixing the hole. Any door or other entrance that will be left open for longer than a few seconds should also be protected with Fresh Cab pouches to make sure that mice will avoid that area all together.
There are several ways mice can enter a home. Many people don't realize that just because you move into a brand new house does not mean that you won't get mice. And just because you have mice in your house does not mean that you are a dirty person or a terrible housekeeper, although a mouse can make you feel that way pretty quick!
By following these few simple steps you can be confident that mice won't come into your home and scare you, just like the lady I met. Needless to say she covered the holes and cracks all the way around her house, and just to be sure the mice didn't return she got a cat!
